What Is The Difference Between Boondocking And RV Camping?

On April 15, 2024

Boondocking is a type of dispersed camping that involves camping without access to water, electricity, or sewage. It is also known as dry camping or independent camping. It is mostly done in remote areas whether it be private or public. Boondocking on private lands requires permission from the land owners.

On the other hand, RV camping offers the opportunity to enjoy outdoor amenities while experiencing a sense of home in a four-wheeled van or truck. RVs can have kitchens, bathrooms, beds, toilets, showers, closets, storage, air conditioning, water heaters, and propane heat.

Comparison Between Boondocking And RV Camping

There are several pros and cons comparing the basic difference between RV Camping and Boondocking. Some of the most common points of differentiation are as follows:

Availability Of Electricity Supply:

Staying in an RV has the major benefit of getting an abundant electricity supply. One can use almost all types of electric gadgets such as lights, air conditioners, hair dryers, toasters, and more without being worried about running out of energy. You are just tension-free and can enjoy the RVing completely. Whereas in Boondocking the camper gets no access to electricity in abundance as it is done at places away from camping grounds with minimum availability of electricity. In case of need, you have to request the land owner for electricity access which you might or might not get.

 Comfort:

In an RV vehicle, one can enjoy the comforts of a home with amenities like beds, kitchens, and bathroom facilities. But in boondocking a camper does get access to such luxurious home-like comfort as it is done independently away from their home-town. Definitely, boondocking makes you independent, no doubt about that. But in case of emergency, you might get stuck in the middle of nowhere. So beginners should get started with the easier version first and then gradually progress to the difficult one!

 Easy Access To Water:

The other most important thing  RV parks provide you is full access to water at any time. One can get a feeling similar to apartment living as they have access to a proper sewage system, and water heaters for hot water showers, one can do laundry and also wash dishes with as much as water they want. It gives a person a complete luxury feeling. A Boondocking camper does not get to enjoy this access to unlimited water due to land available far away from the local city or due to private land. They will have to carry additional water cans which can be exhausting!

Campervan Resort Amenities:

Most of the RV campgrounds in College Station possess amenities like a swimming pool, children’s play area, mini golf ground, restaurants, and convenience stores. All these facilities help the RVers to enjoy their time. Whereas in Boondocking one gets to connect with nature and might get access to limited amenities. But when you are planning to RV camp with groups or family, settling for limited amenities isn’t a wise option.

 Cost-Effective Camping:

RV’s can cost up to 64% less than a traditional vacation, and one can also cut down the food expenses as RV provides kitchen facilities. Whereas in Boondocking initially there was zero expense but today some BLM or NF areas now charge fees due to rising maintenance costs.

 Time With Loves Ones:

RV park provides the facilities that can help you to spend quality time with your loved ones, whether it be your family, your friends, or your pets. Most of the RVs are pet-friendly and provide all the necessary facilities that a pet needs. One can also interact with their fellow campers in the RV Camping grounds. While Boondocking, one can get irritated by fellow campers and will have to move to another place as new campers may not be familiar with the general camping etiquette, and also some of the private areas may not avail the facility of pet-friendly camping.

Motor van Campground Security:

RV Camping is more secure as compared to Boondocking because RV Camping is run and managed by RV resort management which provides better security and services also they have their terms and conditions while in Boondocking there is no guaranteed security as it has to be managed by the camper itself.
